Kinja'd!!!

(This is the post where I take a break from ranting about wagons and informing you about the car-buying process and start a fight on the internet. I'm going to make a bunch of claims with dubious support at best and rustle a bunch of jimmies. I look forward to dodging your punches in the comments)

Read more at Right Foot Down or continue below...

I have never really been a huge fan of Jaguar's current offerings. They have made some nice cars, but for me, none of them has made a strong case against their competition. I suspect I am not alone when I say, the new F-type is the first Jag that I really want...badly. I will now assert that Jaguar has made the most desirable sports-car currently for sale. Notice I said "most desirable" and not "best" and I used the term "sports-car" not exotic (so comparisons to Ferrari and Lambo are out)

Kinja'd!!!

Despite Jaguar's claims that the F-type is a 911 fighter, it is not. They just said that because the 911 is the benchmark for sports-cars in that class, and they are supposed to say it is a 911 fighter. Jaguar does not give a crap about the 911. The Porsche is an icon, hardcore 911 people will always prefer their rear-engine teutonic instrument to anything else. The F-type does also not have the "bang for the buck" factor like the C7 Corvette, the elegance of the Aston Vantage or the physics defying lap-times of the GT-R. And none of this matters.

Kinja'd!!!

Notice how Jaguar never mentioned Ring lap-times for the F-type. Perhaps Cpt. Slow was on their development team. I'm sure they will take the super-high-performance variants and test them on that wonderful track, but again it won't matter. When Jaguar decided that it was going to take on the likes of Porsche and Aston, I suspect they came up with this strategy-

Kinja'd!!!

The F-type will beat its competition by selling something far more primal. You see modern sports cars have gotten away from why we buy sports cars. Despite our non-stop keyboard races as to which is the "best" performance car a good number of you required new pants at the mere !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Because here is the reality, most sports-car buyers make those purchases not because of what their chosen car can "do," they buy because of how that car makes them feel. Sports cars are not about practicality or rationality. They are about emotions and drives (the Freudian kind). You don't want to just "drive" the F-type you have the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Kinja'd!!!

So really the next commercial should have that wonderful British accent say, " The all new Jaguar F-type coupe...why did we call it the F-type?...Because it's the car you want to F@#%."

Hands down the best currently offered sports car that I will never buy because it's automatic only. Maybe if something happens to my left leg? Sigh.

I'd have to agree with you completely. The only thing that stopped me from saying this before was that it was a convertible. But now with the coupe (have you SEEN that ass!) and the absurdly cool R model I think it's better then everything else on the market.

This car still has no impact on me. Like, at all. I guess I've changed since I've grown up and stuff, but this car starts at $65k, and would probably be closer to $80k after the requisite options. Eighty Thousand Dollars. I just don't get it. I can get a $30k C6 vette which is a better sports car in every way, and still have $50k to take 5 vacations in Europe. New car prices... smh.

I agree wholeheartedly with your point. Plus, what really impressed me, besides that sexxxy growl, of course, is how the back of the car excellently captures the essence of the E-type without pushing it or trying to hard.

This is really one of the only cars that I want in that primal sense that you were talking about. That growl does something that no F1 engine can even approach. A study was done a while back to see the effects of a Maserati engine on women, but I think the evidence is there for this engine as well, in both genders.

God, I want one.

I agree with your assessment (which isn't unsprising, I agree with a lot of what you post). The 911 looks like a Beetle, this thing is pure sex on wheels. Lap times mean nothing, I bet this thing make just as good of a noise as the droptop version and looks amazing. As long as it doesn't handle like a lorry, sold.

Actually, this has nothing to do with luxury. It has everything to do with the smile the thing puts on my face when I see and hear it.

It's like hearing a beautiful piece of music. It isn't something that you can quantify, but something you feel deep inside. There are plenty of far more expensive cars that, regardless of there cost or performance numbers, do not have the same effect on me.

Kinja'd!!! Chteelers > octagonnoppo
11/20/2013 at 11:51

Kinja'd!!!0

Agree with your general point, but I think it comes down to purity of function, for me. Like, the P1 is super cool and I really like it, cause it's a no compromise attempt to make the fastest production car possible, and it's accomplishment of that purpose justifies the pricetag. But if the F-type is just a sports car or gran turismo, I think there are vehicles which do that function equally as well, or better, for significantly less. So when Jag attaches such a high pricetag, it seems callously bourgeois and offensive, and it totally ruins my enthusiasm for the car. If they offered this car at $40k base, $50k sport, then I would have a totally different opinion.

I agree with the author's assessment. However, I also think this very reasoning is why this car needs to be available with a traditional, three pedal, manual transmission. It is about the way a car makes you feel. It doesn't matter if the manual is a couple tenths of a tick slower to 60 MPH and gets a couple MPG less in ideal conditions, a sportscar buyer wants that feeling of full physical engagement for maximum stimulation. I really like this car, but I personally want a manual and I know I'll always want one in a "sportscar" as long as I am physically able to operate a clutch.

I agree with the point you're making here about the emotional connection being the prime motivation for buying cars like this. However, I also feel that that leaves Jaguar no excuse for not offering it with a manual transmission. After all, the car really isn't about lap times or numbers. It's about making the person driving it happy.

Jaguar is my favorite marque, and I hate 911s. But if my only choices were those two, I'd have to take the 911 because it offers a manual transmission. The car I want? Build an F-Type coupe with the V6 and a stick, and I promise I won't bitch about the cost or the weight, even though both will be too high.

Like I've said before, a car that you love should make you grin from ear to ear at all times. The very sight of it should make you quiver with excitement. No, that won't be the same car for everyone but you're correct that the lap times are bloody irrelevant to how much a car makes you smile. No, a sports car can't be glacier in its acceleration but it also doesn't matter which one is currently the fastest.

Lets face facts, most people drive their sports cars at glacial speeds anyway compared to what they can do. Short of taking it to the track, the cars rarely even get close to their true potential so the key element of the most iconic and most lusted after sports cars isn't just a factor of acceleration but the pure joy it can bring to you. People talk about it a lot when they compare Ferraris to McLarens. Even when a McLaren can out-race a Ferrari a lot of people (not all) want the Ferrari more. It has that indescribable lust factor, and not just because of the badge. Lamborghini also has managed to grab that lust factor by the balls and shove it into their cars. Heck, Alpha Romeo has it in spades because even when their cars have sucked ass in terms of build and ride quality they still manage to inspire lots of illogical lust in people.

And, to be blunt, Jaguar lost it for a long while and are only now getting that lust factor back. Good on them for recognizing it, finding it, and shoving it into a very attractive package.

See you're doing it again. The Jag is not overpriced. The low cost of the vette has spoiled you. The vette is cheaper than other sports cars because it forgoes everything for performance and price. Which is fine, that's a legitimate way to do it. But the vette is always going to be lacking in refinement compared to its competitors. It has a cheaper interior, it has a less forgiving setup and it isn't as comfortable. Actually drive these cars and you can see where the designers had their priorities and where the money went.

If you're going to compare to Corvette, you have to compare to the new C7 Corvette, which starts just above 50k (not that it's a huge difference, but you know...semantics). Of course it's more expensive than a used car...it's new. Automakers don't price their new cars to be competitive with other used cars, that'd be silly.

I think I agree with you in essence though... I love the car, but there's no way I'd buy one. First, I can't...I haz the poor. But even if I had 80k laying around earmarked for the 'my next ride fund' I still wouldn't buy it, I'd spend that 80 grand on another used car that used to be 150k or more. New cars just aren't worth what they cost. 80k today, 40k in 2 years. Is it worth 40k to own that car for its first 2 years? Just delay your gratification some and enjoy the same car at half price.

My plan is wait 5 years or so and try to find one of these for under 20k that hasn't been abused.

Well I don't doubt that the F-type connects with its drivers. I'm sure it's better than a GT-R for example. But 500lb is a lot. Impressive when you consider the 911 (and the Cayman/Boxster) are no less refined or practical.

If this thing were ~3000lb it would be a much harder choice. We will see though. Maybe the coupe will be a lot lighter than the sedan.

I mean for like $100k you could totally buy like 3 V6 mustang track packs and weld them together into an ultimate V6 mustang track pack, and like track pack at the track in a pack of other V6 track packs. Bro!!V6 Bro!!!!!! Mustang Bro!! 'Murcia!!!!!
TL:DR You clearly don't get this Jag is all about. Enjoy your C6 lolol.

No, I know. Luxury and style are certainly big factors. I just think Jag went a little on the deep end with their pricing. The entry level is a 340 hp small coupe for $65000. Comparible performance cars are all around $35-$40k, so that's a lot of extra dough for the luxury bit. Does the extra style and luxury bits really add $20k in value?

Just saying that if they went Boxster prices it would make so much more sense.

Ftype = $50k

Ftype S = $55k

FType R = $65k

Hey, got to pay to play, thats how it works. If Jag can sell them for that much, more power to them. But please dont compare a brand new car to what you could have bought on the used market. Under that logic I could have bought a used v8 vantage or slightly mangled gallardo, or c63, cobra, an old 930 turbo or any other of the 19 billion other cars out there that I could have bought for less than a brand new Jag. Plus anyway someones got to buy them new so that when the next new car comes out you can exclaim that you could have bought a used F-type for xyz amount less instead. If you wanted to make this a comparo of the new C7 then ok I'd say yeah thats a tough choice between the two and the C7 seem like a better deal, but instead you the V6 mustang track bro, I mean C6 Vette, and save a ton of cash bro route. There's more to life than just horsepower/cost.

It's official you have been spoiled by cheap shit and 50% off specials and $1 menus...

I suspect that one day you'll get this car as a handsome, yet dashing man pulls up beside you at a light in one, and you notice him smiling....and you hear that burble...the light turns green, and you find out why he was smiling as a exceptionally hot woman pulls her head out his lap and both laugh as that raucous V8 rockets him down the road, leaving you and 2 road hickeys, and the smell of burnt rubber behind. F-Type Coupe and Road Head, the antithesis of the cheap man....

Perfect write up. This is exactly why I don't care about a Nissan GTR. Rarely would I ever get to exploit any of the numerical advantages of a lot of sports cars, so as long as it looks good and feels right, I'll be all over it.

When it comes down to it - once you hit a certain point the specs don't matter. Think the Viper is better than the F-Type? You're absolutely correct. Oh, you think the F-Type is better than the Viper? Strange, you're absolutely correct as well.

Who gives a damn what the numbers are. When it comes to sports cars, the best one on the road is the one that speaks to you.

Yeah, maybe. And I'm sure that's the dream that Jag is peddling. But I can have, and have had, all those things without needing to shell out $65k in an attempt to recapture my youth.

Is that confirmed? Last I heard there were "no plans" for a manual.

apparently the "no plans" for a manual was just mentioned today. Up until that point the reports were that a 6MT would come down the line eventually.

I will still hold out hope though.

The problem is that it doesn't have grace. Or not what Sir William meant by the term, anyway.

Then again, I appear to be the only person in the world who thinks it looks tacky and will age ridiculously fast - it's Pamela Anderson in Baywatch, where it should be Sophia Loren.

Ah, there you said it...
You see, I'm eternally youthful...there is nothing to "recapture"...
If you can enjoy something for 55k rather than 65+k then so be it.
But, what you are doing is just like those who rationalized getting a 335i and modding it instead of getting the M3...they rationalized that they rather pay X and flash the ECU than pay 76k for the e92 M3 Comp Package...

The fact is with this Jag, if what they say is true, you get the R with 550hp, and LESS weight than the XKR-S, which costs MORE, and you will have a LOWER 0-60 time, LOWER laps times.

***This car better hustle to well under 4 secs...like 3.5 or less, after all it is packing more torque than a reg 458 Italia, and almost as much hp, but is heavier (how much weight savings went into this car?)

I don't think it's tacky, but I do think it could be better. I definitely like it more than I have any of the other post-2008 designs, as respectable as they all are, they're rather generic. I'm still a massive fan of old Jags and old (and new) Astons, but this could have been far, far worse an addition to the line-up. If not necessarily as fine a successor to the classic E-Type as we might have wanted, far better than merely a shortened XKR would have been.

Well written article, and one I agree with wholeheartedly. This f-type coupe makes me want it in primal ways. An early human being living in a cave would get hard looking at it and hearing it rev.

I think it's mainly in the front-end, but it's the same all over the car in small ways: there's too much going on. The details aren't bad, but it's fussy and overcomplicated instead of stylishly understated.

I was going to say 'try and imagine it without all the vents and fussiness around the front', but then I remembered that you don't have to imagine:

Kinja'd!!!

The basic shape of the coupe is fine, but it needs smoothing over like the concept.
